The department started in 1956 along with the college. The postgraduate classes commenced in 1965. The department is well established having 6 well equipped practical labs. The department has its own departmental Library where students can have books for their study. There are 20 seats and two specializations in PG classes. The faculties of department are actively engaged in research work. The members are also participating in seminars, conferences, symposium etc. all over India. The research work has been recognized by renowned journals nationally and internationally. The members are holding prestigious post in different areas. The department have taught students from all parts of India.
13 Students have been awarded Ph.D. degree so far. Passed out students have been selected in IIT's / renowned institutes for M. Sc. / M. Phil / M. Tech./ M.C.A. etc. Many students of the department have been qualified CSIR NET examination, some of them are holding very prestigious posts as Managing Director/ Director/ Principal etc and some students are working in Department of Atomic Energy, etc and in different universities of INDIA such as Kurukshtra University, Haryana, Manipur, etc. Our students are also holding prestigious post in abroad as AGM at Bank of America
